Cawood Ledford letters to Tom Leach

Today I was surfing the internet and came across some of Cawood Ledford's letters that he had written to Tom Leach. Enjoy and man wish we could still hear Cawood today calling some of the UK games with Coach Gillispie and Coach Brooks at the helm. Tom has the letters posted on his site Tom Leach Promotions.

Here's the links to the letters on Tom's site:

From reports it seems Newton is down to Kentucky, Clemson and Florida.
Larry Vaught says that according to Newton's High school coach, Newton has always liked the Cats. If Newton does chose to play for the Cats, the fans will be able to watch Newton Saturday on ESPN at Noon as his high school team the Carmel Greyhounds play Indianapolis Cathedral.

Russell Byrd 2010 UK Prospect

Russell Byrd 6-foot-7 190 lbs. shooting guard from Blackhawk Christian HS in Fort Wayne,(IN) and in the 2010 class made a visit to Kentucky this week. Byrd is interested in Kentucky and has a offer from Kentucky, along with offers from Iowa, Michigan State, Notre Dame, Michigan State, Wake Forest, Louisville, Baylor and Indiana.
The good news is Byrd plans to attend UK's Big Blue Madness this fall. A Russell Byrd commitment to UK would be a nice addition to go along with a class of Dominique Ferguson, Dakotah Euton and KC Ross-Miller for 2010. Say what you will, but recruiting has sure been fun to follow and the recruitment of Byrd is one to keep a eye on.

Former UK Basketball Great Shelby Linville & 1951 NCAA Champion Dies

Bogansback2basil
Wildcats Thunder Administrator

I thought a bit more on Shelby Linville's devotion to UK and his thoughts on what UK could have been if not for a "joke" of a scandal in the early 50s might be in order.

For the record, my term "joke" comes form that fact that SCADS of New York-based college programs were found guilty of gambling and throwing games - Bill Spivey was found guilty of NOT reporting a bribe that he DID NOT ACCEPT -- and UK, of course, received the all-time penalty unlike any program of its stature.

Here is a great read from Lonnie Wheeler's "Blue Yonder" regarding Shelby Linville.

Big Blue Blessings to the Linville family during this time.

“Without Spivey, the team’s top returning frontcourt player figured to be Linville, an agile 6-6 forward from Middletown, Ohio. Linville had started every game as a junior and was named on the all-conference second team, but strangely he saw only occasional action as a senior. “I was out for a little while with an injury, then came back and had a good game” recalled Linville, builder and pastor of Middletown’s Roselawn Baptist Church, whose congregation consists largely of Kentucky-born folks. “The next game was against St. Louis. Coach Rupp put me in, I tipped in a basket, and he took me out. That was the last time he talked to me for five or six games. Then he put me back as the sixth man, and never said anything about it. That spring, after the trial and everything, I was watching a Kentucky baseball game and [athletic director] Bernie Shively saw me. He said, ‘Shelby, will you speak to Adolph? This thing has really hit him hard. So I sat down with him. I told him there were times when I could have just hit him and left. But the whole reason why he wouldn’t play me didn’t dawn on me until later. My name had been brought up in rumors in New York because I had roomed with Hirsch, Line and Barnstable. Three of us were from Ohio and one from Indiana. The connection was obvious. During those five or six games when I didn’t play, that was when I was being cleared in sworn statements by those three players. They said they were afraid of me, that I was too true blue. When I sat down in Coach Rupp’s office that day, he said ‘Shelby, I owe you a public apology. I probably kept you from being an All-American.’ I told Ralph Beard about that conversation the Ralph said, ‘You’re unique. You’re the only one that Adolph ever apologized to.’ But I could tell that the whole thing hurt Coach bad, real bad.”

For Linville, whose devotion to the Wildcats is so enduring that he brings in guest speakers and stages a UK Conference at his church every July for the countless Ohioans who haven’t forsaken their Kentucky roots, the scandal had multiple repercussions. The program of which he remains so proud was permanently stained; his opportunity for personal achievement and even a profession career was wiped out; he watched good people – notably Spivey – taken down unnecessarily; and he can’t rid himself of the notion that he might have played on the best in team in Kentucky history.

“Figure it out,” Linville said as he stretched out his long legs in the church office, where UK mementoes shared the walls with his ministerial trappings. “If it hadn’t been for the scandal, Kentucky would have had a run almost like UCLA. I really think we would have been another UCLA. [As it was, in the seven years surrounding the scandal, UK recorded three national championships and completed another season undefeated.] If the ’52 team had had Spivey and no scandal, it would have been the greatest Kentucky team of all. I really believe that.”

UK 2008-09 Basketball Schedule

UK Coach Billy Gillispie and the 2008-09 mens basketball team kicks off the season with two exhibition games before starting the regular season. The Cats will start with VMI, then to North Carolina before taking part in the 2008 Findlay Toyota Las Vegas Invitational in November. On Dec. 7th UK will welcome former Wildcat and first-year Mississippi Valley State head coach Sean Woods one of "The Unforgettables" back to Rupp Arena. This season, 13 of Kentucky’s 31 regular-season games will be on CBS, ESPN, ESPN2 or ESPNU including eight of the Cats’ 16 SEC contests. UK could pick up a 14th nationally televised contest should the team advance to the championship game in Vegas. So get ready for another season of the Big Blue Nation of Madness as UK and Coach Gillispie prepare for the SEC and NCAA Tournaments. Should be a fun and excited season.
