Kentucky vs UNC Ashville 11/8/13 Friday..7PM
(TV-FoxSouth)
UK leads the series 3-0

UNC Ashville Bullogs (Big South Conference)

Location: Ashville, NC
Enrollment: 3,500
Arena: 3,500

2012-13 Record: 16-16
2012-13 Big South Record: 10-6
2012-13 Postseason: None

Head Coach: Nick McDevitt
Career Record: First year as head coach

Nick McDevitt takes over as HC after serving 10 years as an assistant for the Bulldogs. Coach McDevitt has his work cut out for him with top scorer and rebounder Jeremy Atkinson lost to graduation and second leading scorer Kieth Hornsby transferring to LSU. On the positive side, three starters return…..D.J. Cunningham who was the 2nd leading rebounder…Trent Meyer who led the team in perimeter shots made, assists with 125 and steals at 64……and Will Weeks who averaged 9 PPG. Jaron Lane was redshirted last season due to an ankle injury and should be able to return at full strength this season.

This will be the Bulldogs first game of the season so obviously the lineup below may see other players crack the starting lineup.

Probable Starting Lineup

Will Weeks-F-6’6”-Soph……………....PPG-9.0
Sam Hughes-F-6’4”-Soph……………...PPG-2.9
D.J. Cunningham-C-6’10”-Sr………….PPG-7.6
Trent Meyer-G-6’3”-Sr…………….…..PPG-9.7
Jaron Lane-G-6’4”-R-Sr………………..PPG-11.5 (2011-12)

The Kentucky Wildcats open the season with arguably the highest or certainly near highest expectations in the program’s history. The Cats are coming off a very disappointing season….actually a humbling season as coach Cal has described it. Certainly, losing in the 1st round of the NIT was not what UK fans, UK players or the coaching staff envisioned for last season!

However, it’s a new season with a new team….a team that includes arguably the greatest recruiting class in college basketball history….with experience and depth that was sorely missing from last years UK team.

Coach Cal has made it crystal clear that he will not tolerate players not playing with great energy and not playing solid defense….and this season with the terrific depth….players that disappoint on the floor will be on the bench. This UK team is loaded with as much talent or more talent as any previous Cal team and he wants to more than make up for last season’s huge disappointment with another NCAA championship. But Cal knows that great talent alone doesn’t win championships….these players must totally buy in to playing each game with great passion…..play unselfishly….and play as a team with tremendous defense.

It all starts with UNC Ashville…….the journey toward NCAA championship #9 begins!

I see a great opening victory for UK with a 30 point win……GO Cats!
